Private Ellis Phythian escaped from a working camp attached to Posen, making his way through Germany by jumping a freight train to France where he met an escape line who helped him onwards down to Gibraltar.

Series 6, Episode 3 - Third Mate AH Bird

A merchant sailor, Bird is captured in the Pacific Ocean but imprisoned in Marlag und Milag Nord, the POW camp in Germany for sailors. Escaping to a nearby dockyards, Bird spends more time in the pub than escaping, before eventually stowing away on a ship bound for Sweden, where he was to stay for some time before returning to the UK.

You might have heard of Sgt Pepper, but probably not of his wartime prisoner-of-war escape! Escaping from a working camp attached to the largest POW camp of the war, he chose to remain in Munich for two years, working on behalf of an underground anti-Nazi movement, operating in the birthplace of Nazism. A truly remarkable escape story!
